Section 2
How It Gets Installed
The project happens in 8 steps, usually spread over 2 to 4 weeks. Steps marked in red require hiring a licensed professional. Steps marked in green can be done by a handy family member or handyman.
1
Plumber Runs the Water Lines
This is the very first thing that happens, before any cabinets go up. The bathroom is right on the other side of this wall, so the plumber can connect to those existing pipes and run a water line to where the sink will be. Doing this first means all the pipes will be hidden behind the cabinets.
🔧 Hire a Licensed Plumber
2
Electrician Installs the Range Outlet
The stove needs a special high-powered outlet — the same kind that a clothes dryer uses. An electrician runs a new wire from the home's electrical panel to where the stove will sit. They will also add regular outlets along the countertop area for small appliances like a coffee maker.
🔧 Hire a Licensed Electrician
3
Assemble the Cabinets
The Brookings cabinets come in flat boxes and snap together using a simple clip system. They include clear picture-by-picture instructions — no special skills needed, just time and patience. Plan for a full weekend day to get all of them assembled.

4
Hang the Cabinets
The wall cabinets are hung first, then the floor cabinets are set in place and leveled. Everything must be screwed into the solid wood framing hidden inside the wall (called "studs") so that everything is safe and secure and will not come loose over time.
✓ Handyman or Experienced DIYer
5
Install the Countertop
The butcher block countertop is measured, cut to fit the full length of the base cabinets, and laid on top. A hole is cut in just the right spot for the sink to drop into. The edges around that hole are sealed with waterproof caulk to protect the wood from water damage.
✓ Handyman or Experienced DIYer
6
Plumber Connects the Sink and Faucet
The plumber comes back to set the sink into the countertop opening, connect it to the water lines from Step 1, and install the faucet. They will run the water and check every connection carefully to make sure nothing is leaking.
🔧 Hire a Licensed Plumber
7
Move in the Appliances
The stove slides into its spot and plugs into the special outlet. Important: a small metal safety bracket that comes in the box with the stove must be screwed into the floor before the stove is used for the first time. This keeps the stove from tipping forward if someone leans on an open oven door. It takes about 5 minutes. The under-counter fridge slides into its space and plugs into a regular outlet.
✓ DIY
8
Add the Finishing Touches
The range hood is mounted under the wall cabinet directly above the stove. The LED puck lights are pressed onto the underside of the upper cabinets and plugged in. Cabinet handles are screwed onto all doors and drawers. The peel-and-stick backsplash is applied to the wall between the countertop and the upper cabinets. A thin line of white caulk is run along the edge where the countertop meets the wall for a clean finished look.

Good Things to Know

🚰 About the Undermount Sink

An undermount sink is installed from below the countertop, so the rim of the sink is hidden underneath. The countertop has a smooth, clean cutout with no metal lip around it. This looks very elegant and makes cleanup easy — you can wipe water and crumbs directly from the counter into the sink with no ridge to catch on. The plumber will seal around the edges to make it waterproof.

🌀 About the Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal sits underneath the sink and grinds up food scraps — peels, leftovers, coffee grounds — so they wash safely down the drain. It is turned on and off with a small switch on the wall or counter near the sink. The plumber connects it to the drain during sink installation, and the electrician adds a small outlet under the sink to power it. No special maintenance is needed other than running cold water while it is in use.

❄️ About the Under-Counter Fridge

The Simzlife fridge is only about 32 inches tall, which is shorter than a regular kitchen counter. This means it slides right under the countertop and looks built-in. It has a small freezer section on top and plenty of refrigerator space below. It plugs into any regular wall outlet and runs quietly.

🪵 Caring for the Wood Countertop

Once or twice a year, rub a little food-safe mineral oil (sold at any hardware store for a few dollars) into the countertop with a cloth. This keeps the wood from drying out. Always wipe up water spills quickly. The countertop will look even more beautiful over time as the wood naturally darkens and develops character.

💡 The Under-Cabinet Lights Are Very Simple

These lights peel off a backing strip and stick right onto the underside of the wall cabinet — no drilling or wiring needed. They link together with small cords and plug into a regular outlet, just like a lamp. A dimmer switch is included so the light can be made brighter or softer.

🌀 The Range Hood Does Not Need a Hole in the Wall

The range hood works by pulling cooking air through a charcoal filter and then sending the cleaned air back into the room. No venting to the outside is needed at all. The charcoal filter just needs to be replaced about once every 6 months — replacement filters are inexpensive and easy to swap out yourself.

⚡ The Stove's Safety Bracket

A small metal bracket comes in the box with every stove. It must be screwed into the floor directly behind the stove before the stove is turned on for the first time. This is required by safety code. It prevents the stove from tipping forward if someone accidentally puts weight on an open oven door. It takes about 5 minutes to install.

📋 Permits Are Required

Any time new plumbing or electrical wiring is added in Minnesota, a permit is required by law. The plumber and the electrician each apply for their own permit — you do not need to do anything yourself. It is a good idea to ask them to confirm this before any work begins.
